Wastwater Wastwater is England's deepest lake with fantastic screes coming right down to the lakes edge. Wasdale Head at the head of the valley, close to the lake, is the spiritual home of English mountaineering.Visit the graveyard of St. Olaf's Church to see memorials to the many climbers who met their end on the nearby mountains. Visit also the Inn to enjoy a real ale & peruse the fascinating old climbing photographs . Visit St Mary's Church in Gosforth close to Wastwater with its famous Viking Cross in the graveyard depicting the victory of Christ over the Heathen Gods. See also Two 10th century 'Hogback'Viking tombstones inside the church which covered the graves of Norse Chieftains ,shaped as houses of the dead, and carved with battle scenes.
