Horseracing in Cartmel

The horseracing at Cartmel racecourse is unique with its four-furlong run-in , the longest of any racecourse in Britain. At the other end of the scale, Cartmel's racecourse is very small with the racetrack only a mile long.

"Bob" Champion, famous National Hunt jockey, rode at Cartmel many times. He won the 1981 Grand National on Aldaniti and he always said that the Cartmel racecourse was his favourite venue. National Hunt horseracing is also known as steeplechasing or horseracing over jumps. This form of horseracing comes from the tradition of hunting for foxes to protect the Lake District sheep & lambs.

Betting & horseracing go together like a hand in the glove, so try Free horseracing bets as an introduction to the excitement of betting on the racehorses.

Cartmel is a delightful littlevillage in the south of the lake district. Famous for its sticky toffee pudding, its horseracing & 12th Century Cartmel Priory. The Priory is one of the Lake Districts most famous tourist attractions. The tradition of horseracing in the area was started by the Priory monks holding mule races!

Since 1856 horseracing at Cartmel Racecourse has been a major attraction for the whole family so come & have fun! Take the word of the Racegoers Club who named this Lake District racecourse the Best Small Racecourse in the North.
